This policy explains what I do with your personal information when you visit this website, buy something from the shop, or subscribe to my newsletter. I have tried to write it in plain English rather than legal boilerplate. If anything is unclear, please just ask me.
Who I am
I’m Graeme Dinnen, a sole trader in Cornwall, which is where I make a living doing several things rather badly but with considerable enthusiasm. I sell mineral-rich sea salt, write stories, publish books and eBooks, and run a natural health side of the business devoted to the increasingly unfashionable idea that what we put into our bodies might actually matter.
I am the data controller for the information described in this policy.

What information I collect
When you place an order
Your name, email address, billing address, delivery address, your phone number if you choose to give it, and the details of what you ordered.
Card payments are handled entirely by Stripe on their own secure systems. I never see or store your card number.
When you subscribe to the newsletter
Your email address, and your first name if you give it.
When you email me
Your email address and whatever you choose to tell me in your message.
When you simply browse the site
If you accept analytics cookies, I collect general information about how the site is used: which pages are viewed, roughly which part of the world you are in, your browser and device type, and which site you arrived from. If you decline analytics cookies, none of this is collected.
Why I use it, and my legal basis
Under UK data protection law I must have a lawful basis for using your information. Mine are as follows.
- To process and deliver your order, and to deal with any problem or return – because it is necessary to perform our contract.
- To keep records of sales for tax and accounting purposes – because I have a legal obligation to do so.
- To send you the Roots & Remedies newsletter – with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- To understand how the site is used through analytics – with your consent, given through the cookie banner.
- To reply to your enquiries – because it is in our mutual legitimate interest that I answer you.
Personally, I do not want anyone to sell my information and consequently I do not sell, rent or trade yours. I do not use our information for automated decision-making or profiling.
The newsletter
My newsletter is called Roots & Remedies. It is sent using Kit (formerly ConvertKit), who store your email address on my behalf and record whether emails are opened and which links are clicked, so I have some idea whether anyone is reading.
You only receive it if you ask to. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and one click removes you. You can also email me and I will take you off the list myself.
Who I share information with
I share the minimum necessary with a small number of service providers who act on my instructions:
- Stripe : to take payment securely.
- Kit (ConvertKit) : to send the newsletter.
- Google Analytics : to measure site usage, only if you have accepted analytics cookies.
- My web host : who store the site and its database.
- Royal Mail or a courier : the name and delivery address needed to get a parcel to you.
- My accountant : sales records, for tax returns.
Some of these providers process data outside the UK. Where that happens, the transfer is covered by safeguards approved under UK law, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
Beyond that, I would only disclose your information if I were legally required to.
Cookies
A cookie is a small file stored by your browser. When you first arrive you will see a banner asking which cookies you are happy with. Nothing optional is set until you choose.
Strictly necessary cookies
These are always on, because the site cannot work without them. They remember what is in your basket, keep you signed in through checkout, and record which cookie choices you made so you are not asked again on every page.
E-Commerce cookies
WooCommerce uses these cookies primarily to keep track of cart data and recognise when cart contents change, ensuring a smooth shopping experience. They contain no personal information and are strictly necessary for the operation of the online store.
| Cookie Name | Expiration / Duration | Purpose | Type |
woocommerce_items_in_cart | Session | Helps WooCommerce determine if there are items in the customer’s shopping cart. | Essential / Strictly Necessary |
woocommerce_cart_hash | Session | Helps WooCommerce know when cart data/contents change. | Essential / Strictly Necessary |
wp_woocommerce_session_ | 2 Days | Contains a unique code for each customer so that WooCommerce knows where to find the cart data in the database for each customer. | Essential / Strictly Necessary |
woocommerce_recently_viewed | Session | Powers the “Recently Viewed Products” widget by storing product IDs recently viewed by the customer. | Functional |
store_notice[notice_id] | Session | Prevents a store notice banner from showing once a customer has dismissed or closed it. | Functional |
Analytics cookies
These are set by Google Analytics and only with your consent. They tell me how many people visit, which Stories are read and which pages are ignored. They are not used to identify you personally.
What I do not use
There is no advertising on this site. I do not use retargeting, ad-tracking or social media tracking pixels.
Changing your mind
You can reopen the cookie settings at any time using the cookie icon or link on the site and change your choices. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though the basket and checkout may stop working properly if you block the necessary ones.
How long I keep information
- Order and payment records – six years after the end of the tax year they relate to, as HMRC requires.
- Newsletter subscription – until you unsubscribe, after which your address is removed.
- Emails you send me – usually no more than two years, unless they relate to an order.
- Analytics data – 14 months, after which Google deletes it automatically.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Ask for a copy of the information I hold about you.
- Have anything inaccurate corrected.
- Ask me to delete your information, where I have no obligation to keep it.
- Ask me to restrict how I use it.
- Object to my using it where my basis is legitimate interests.
- Receive your information in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time, for the newsletter or for cookies.
To exercise any of these, email me at graeme@resourcesforlife.net. It costs you nothing and I will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how I have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. I would rather you spoke to me first so I have a chance to put it right.
Security
The whole site runs over an encrypted connection, payments happen on Stripe’s systems rather than mine, and access to the site’s admin is limited and password protected. That said, no website can promise perfect security, and I would not want to pretend otherwise.
If a breach ever occurred that put your rights at risk, I would report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office within 72 hours of becoming aware of it, and tell you directly without delay if there were a high risk to you.
Children
The shop and the newsletter are intended for adults. I do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given me their details, please contact me and I will delete them.
Other websites
Some Stories and some shop listings link out to other websites, including a few products that are sold by other people rather than by me. Once you leave this site you are covered by their privacy policy, not mine, and I have no control over what they do. It is worth a look before you hand over anything personal.
Changes to this policy
If I change this policy I will update this page and change the date at the top. There is no need to check back regularly — anything significant that affects you, I will tell you about.
