The Sistine Chapel of Anatomy

My long-time friend Kenneth, who sadly shuffled off this mortal coil in July, was a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner – a title that, in his case, never quite captured the depth of his passion for the subject.

To say he was “successful” would be to undersell the peculiar magic he had, a wizard with needles, herbs, and the subtle energy lines of the body.

Kenneth had a particular fascination with what he called the Governor Points and the meridians. If you ever met him, you’d know exactly what I mean. His eyes would light up with childlike enthusiasm as he spoke of the body as if it were the Sistine Chapel of anatomy, endlessly marvellous.

Conversations with Kenneth were always an education, each visit to his home like attending a masterclass in the ancient art of not falling apart.

His gospel was Yin and Yang, the energy flow that courses through us all, essential to vitality, circulation, and that elusive thing called good health. In his view, life’s little emotional car crashes and physical bruises could block these rivers of energy. And it was his job – his life’s work, really – to set people back on course.

Take, for example, the point in the centre of your forehead, right between your eyebrows – the Third Eye, as Kenneth would serenely point out, or Governor Vessel 24, as it’s known in TCM. It’s a pressure point, of course, but in Kenneth’s hands, it became something far more mystical.

He would encourage you to press on it lightly for up to 60 seconds, then gently stroke upwards, sending waves of calm rippling through your temples and beyond. This tiny action, he claimed with unwavering conviction, could reduce headaches, untangle tension, sharpen your intuition, and even ease the strain on your eyes after hours of staring at the soul-sucking blue light of a screen.

To Kenneth, the human body wasn’t just flesh and bone. It was a symphony of energy, an ever-shifting, ever-vulnerable balance of forces. He wasn’t a doctor; he was a conductor, and when he spoke about healing, you could almost hear the music.

TCM Researchers wrote “This procedure activates one of the brain centers, amygdala nucleus, which affects the human lymphatic system causing elimination of nervous tension and helping removal of the negative metabolism products. Moreover, this procedure efficiently counteracts creation of new wrinkles, facilitates blood and lymph flow (prevents swelling), makes the skin excellently firm, corrects the eye and mouth corners and activates regeneration processes (e.g. after a surgery).

Press this Third Eye point tonight before you fall asleep, and again when you wake tomorrow.
